Land acknowledgment

The University of Washington is situated on the ancestral territory of the Puyallup, Suquamish, Tulalip, Muckleshoot, and Duwamish nations. The Treaty of Point Elliott of 1855 relocated and condensed these tribes onto reservations where they were met with poverty, diminishing natural resources due to industrialization, and cultural genocide caused by the forceful removal of their children to boarding schools. Our Indigenous community members and neighbors have maintained vibrant communities, contributing to the cultural, social, and scientific vitality of Washington and the Puget Sound area. To learn more about the Duwamish nation and their struggle for sovereignty please visit their website, and if you live in Seattle and would like to pay rent to the Duwamish please do so here. If you would like to learn more about the land on which you reside and its cultural heritage, please visit Native Land.
